PeopleAlex Burak

BiographyDr. Alexander Burak is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies. He currently teaches Russian language and literature, Russian culture, and translation/ interpretation. He was born in Ukraine. At age 17, he moved to Moscow and lived there until 2000. He is completely bilingual, i.e. has a native command of both Russian and Ukrainian. His family still lives in Ukraine. He is a graduate of the Translation and Interpreting Department of the Maurice Thorez Foreign Languages Institute in Moscow (currently called the Moscow Linguistics University), where he completed a five-year course of studies with a major in English-Russian-Italian translation and interpreting. In 1992, he obtained the Russian equivalent of a Ph.D. in sociology (Candidate of Sociological Sciences) in the Department of Sociology at Moscow State University. Since 2000 he has held the post of lecturer, senior lecturer, and now Assistant Professor in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies. From 1977 to 2002 he held the successive posts of instructor, senior instructor, and assistant professor (being the Chair of the Department of Lexicography and Theory of Translation from 1998 to 2002) in the Faculty (School) of Foreign Languages at Lomonosov Moscow State University. Besides Russian and Ukrainian, Dr. A. Burak has a near-native command of English, and a working knowledge of Italian. He is a practicing translator and interpreter, a member of the Union of Translators of Russia, as well as the author of a number of scholarly publications. Publications
