Diedrich Diederichsen, Max Kade Writer in Residence
Diedrich
Diederichsen is Professor of Contemporary Art and Theory at the Merz Akademie
in Stuttgart, Germany. He has curated a number of important exhibitions,
and has published widely in art and culture journals and exhibition catalogues.
He edited "Sounds" magazine from
1979-1983 and founded and edited "Spex" magazine from 1985 until
1990.
Professor Diedrichsen is also member of the Board of the Kulturstiftung
des Bundes (Federal German Cultural Foundation), and of the ZMI at the
Universität Gießen (Center for Media and Interactivity). He
is also the author of numerous books, including Golden Years: Dokumente
und

Martin Lüdke, Courtesy Professor
Prof. Martin Lüdke, critic of literature, was born in Apolda
(Thüringen). He studied philosophy, sociology, German studies, and
political science. From 1976 to 1978 he was a scientific fellow at the
Social Science Institute Federation in Munich (SOWI) and Professor for
20th century German literature at the J. W. Goethe University in Frankfurt
am Main. He has also been aVisiting Professor at several American universities,
including San Diego, Los Angeles, and St. Louis. He served as editor at
the Hessischer Rundfunk from 985 to 1990, and is editor at the Südwestfunk
since 1990. He writes for the newspapers Frankfurter Rundschau, Die Zeit,
Spiegel, and Literaturen.
Filmmaker Haroun Farocki, Artist in Residence
The Artist in Residence for 2002 was Harun Farocki who has been
making films and videos since 1966. The prolific filmmaker makes film
essays on sociopolitical themes. His unique style joins formal and political
concerns and closely links image and text. In a 1993 interview, Farocki
noted, "I probably write, or rather occupy myself with writing, in order
to determine the difference between film and text. I want films that are
not far removed from texts, and that are nonetheless very distinct." Farocki
completed his studies at the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie in Berlin
in 1968. In 1974, he became editor and chief author of the journal filmkritik.
His work includes Gefängnisbilder (2000), Der Ausdruck der Hände
(1997), Die Bewerbung (1997), Stilleben (1997), Der Auftritt (1996), Schnittstelle
(1995), Videogramme einer Revolution (1992), Leben - BRD (1990), and Bilder
der Welt und Inschrift des Krieges (1988). He has aught at the University

Uwe Timm, Writer in Residence
The Artist in Residence for 2000 was Uwe Timm (Munich & Berlin),
author of eight novels, a novella, four children’s novels, and essays,
as well as a number of film screenplays (including ‘Der Flieger’
and ‘Die Bubi Scholz Story’). His novels ‘Morenga’,
‘Kerbels Flucht’, and ‘Rennschwein Rudi Rüssel’
have been turned into feature films, while his ‘Die Zugmaus’
was made into an acclaimed cartoon film. Four of his novels are available
in English translation from New Directions, New York.
Jürgen Lodemann, Writer in Residence
The Artist in Residence for 2004 was Prof. Jürgen Lodemann.
Born in 1936 in Essen, he completed studies in German Languages and
Literatures and in Geography in Freiburg, Germany. He served as
editor and anchorman of television shows in Baden-Baden, Germany ("Literaturmagazin"
and "Café Größenwahn")for 30 years, and was the originator
of the "Bestenliste: Dokumentarfilme". He is a member of PEN-Zentrum.
He has taught at Universities in Stuttgart, Frankfurt, Marburg, and Freuburg,
as well as in Essen, Germany and Galway in Ireland. In 1978 he was
awarded the Kerr-Preis for Literaturkritik. Latest publications
include "Muttermord" (novel) and "Lortzing" (Biographie).

The Max Kade Visiting Professor for Spring 2005 is Prof. Dr. Ulrich
Gaier, of the Universität Konstanz in Germany.
