Types of Financial Aid

Teaching Assistantships

Teaching Assistants receive a stipend for teaching one Beginning German language course per semester (13 hours), plus a fee waiver for three graduate courses per semester. In addition, a number of graduate supplementary awards of $2,000 per year are available to good students on a competitive basis. Each Teaching Assistant works under the supervision of the TA Supervisor and must enroll for a minimum of 9 credits each semester. The selection of Teaching Assistants is based upon academic performance, progress toward degree (for the M.A. normally two years), teaching ability, and active participation in workshops. Teaching Assistants are appointed for fall and spring semester, their contracts are renewed annually based on the above criteria. Summer Teaching Assistant ships are subject to availability.

Presidential Graduate Research Fellowships

These prestigious fellowships are to be awarded to exceptional graduate students beginning work toward a doctoral degree at the University of Florida. The Fellowship carries a stipend of $15,000 for the first year plus tuition waivers and is renewable for up to three years, providing the student is in good standing and is making progress toward the degree. Applicants must have an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.5 (4 point scale) and a minimum GRE score of 1400. Presidential Graduate Research Fellowships are limited to U.S. citizens or permanent resident aliens who are not currently enrolled in U.F. Graduate School. Application deadline is February 15.

Graduate Council Fellowships, Grinter Fellowships, and Minority Fellowships and Scholarships

A considerable number of fellowships and scholarships are available with stipends up to $10,000 for the academic year. Consult the Graduate School or the General Information section of the Graduate Catalog for a listing of programs. All fellows pay resident registration fees, and those classified as non-Florida students pay additional non-Florida tuition unless also awarded a Non-Florida Tuition Waiver. The Graduate Scholarship Program is being continuously expanded. Applicants will be informed of the current situation. For updated information check the web site.

Study Abroad

The Department sponsors graduate student exchanges with the Universities of Mannheim and Innsbruck. Applicants must be in good standing in the Graduate School, be fluent in German, and have an overall 3.0 GPA.

The University of Mannheim awards a stipend for UF graduate students to cover living expenses. During her/his studies in Mannheim s/he will be enrolled at the University of Florida and fees for courses will be assessed locally. In addition, the student will need to purchase health insurance at the University of Mannheim.

The exchange with the University of Innsbruck takes the form of a teaching fellowship. The graduate student teaches English courses at a local Gymnasium and receives a fee waiver for courses taken at the University (education in Austria is not tuition-free).

In all of these cases, courses taken at a German-speaking university count for credit at the University of Florida.

Research and Travel Grants

Graduate students may apply for travel and research grants awarded by the Graduate School. Competition for awards is held each semester pending available funding.
