Major Program

The Major in German consists of 30 credit hours of course work, including:

• at least three classes (9 cred. hrs.) advanced GER and/or GEW 4000 level courses with course work in German
• at least two classes (6 cred. hrs.) of GER 3234, GER 3401, and GER 3402, GEW 3100, GEW 3101
• additional elective courses in the German Studies Curriculum adding up to a total of 30 hours (Note: 1000 and 2000 level courses do NOT count towards major credit)
• up to three GET-prefix courses in translation may be taken for major credit).
• up to 15 credits of 3000- or 4000- level classes may be transferred from another institution.
• no more than 3 credits can be earned in independent studies courses such as GEW 4905

Minor Program

The Minor in German consists of 15 credits hours of course work, including:

• nine credit hours of advanced (3000- and 4000-) level work
• two electives (six credits), selected from 3000- or 4000- level GER and GEW courses
• One course in translation (GET) can count toward the minor and may be taken concurrently with the basic language sequence.

The Language Component

Majors and minors in Germanic Studies will acquire the ability to do some advanced (i.e., 4000-level) work (discussion and writing) in German by acquiring German language skills in courses that consist of intensive work on the basic skills and also of assignments (employing the World Wide Web) that introduce students to German culture through the language. Students are encouraged to participate for a summer, semester, or year in one of our programs abroad (Bonn, Mannheim).

Courses in Translation

Students are encouraged to explore a (double) major or minor in Germanic Studies by taking one of the regularly offered courses in translation, most of which satisfy (H)umanities and (I)nternational requirements.
